      Why Study at Inner Mongolia University, China

      Inner Mongolia University (IMU) is located north of the Great Wall in Hohhot, known as “prairie pearl,” capital city of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. IMU was the earliest established comprehensive university in the national minority area in 1957 just after “new China” had been founded. In 1997 IMU was established as a National Top University and listed in China’s “211 Project” with priority as one of China’s Top 100 Universities. In 2004 the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region’s Peoples Government and the National Ministry of Education joined together in cooperation to further improve IMU. That same year the Ministry of Education awarded IMU’s undergraduate course teaching work as outstanding among colleges and universities. In recent years, the University has also made efforts to provide courses taught in English, Japanese and Russian. For example, the College of Law has officially listed during an important, cosmetic curriculum reform since the mid-2000s. Many other colleges have followed this practice.

      1. History

      Inner Mongolia University (IMU) was established in 1957 in Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Being awarded the national key comprehensive university by the Ministry of Education of China in 1978, it was listed as one of 100 universities of the "211 Project" universities for key construction and development in 1997. In 2004 the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region’s Peoples Government and the National Ministry of Education joined together in cooperation to further improve IMU. That same year the Ministry of Education awarded IMU’s undergraduate course teaching work as outstanding among colleges and universities. The University has formed education programs of different levels such as doctoral, postgraduate, undergraduate and higher vocational and technical education programs, etc. The current number of students at different levels in the University amounts to 31,792, including 6,462 graduate students, 19,781 undergraduate students, over 800 foreign students.

      2. Discipline and Programs

      Inner Mongolia University (IMU) consists of 20 colleges and 1 Physical Education Department under which there are 34 departments, and 1 independent department for general education. The university provides 130 programs for master's degrees and 82 undergraduate majors. IMU has undergone more than 50 years of development and has formed disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, Neo-Confucianism, technology, agronomy, management and art theory. These nine classes of disciplines are offered as Undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctoral programs. IMU has both a bright national reputation and a local character with both domestic and foreign influence. In addition, IMU has 6 post-doctorate mobile research centers, 107 doctorate programs.

      3. Academic Facilities and Research Centers

      Inner Mongolia University has three separate campuses, all located in city of Hohhot. The main campus is adjacent to Manduhai Park. To meet the need for rapid development of higher education in both Inner Mongolia and the whole China, the University is undergoing an expansion on a large scale. A new campus is being built in suburban Hohhot, these campuses covering an area of 1,990 thousand square meters.

      The following are the main research centers of IMU: Research of Mongolian Language, Research of Mongolian History, Research of Modern & Contemporary History, Research on Neighboring Countries, Research of Mongolian Culture, Center of Mongolology, Center of Economic & Social Development, Institute of High Polymer Science, Center for Laboratory Animal Science, Center of Biological Engineering, Research of Natural Resources. The university has established Inner Mongolian Press, which publishes books in both Chinese and Mongolian. Annually, it publishes about 120 books.  Inner Mongolia University Press has published 1315 books since it was established, among which 140 books were in Mongolian, and 60 books were in English, Japanese and Russian, etc.

      4. Inner Mongolia University Achievement

      Inner Mongolia University has 2,727 teachers and staff. The full-time teachers and researchers are 1,769 including 211 professors and 332 associate professors. The University boasts 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 double-employed academicians, 70 Special Government Allowance winners, 5 candidates of “Hundred-thousand-ten thousands Expert Project”, and 13 candidates of the “New Century Supporting Program for Outstanding Personnel of the Ministry of Education of China”.

      5. Communication and International Cooperation

      Inner Mongolia University is attaching a great importance to international academic exchange and cooperation. Currently, Inner Mongolia University has been actively enhancing its exchanges and cooperation with international universities and research institutes and it has officially signed agreements of inter-collegiate exchange and cooperation with more than 63 foreign universities. Currently, the university has over 800 international students.
